Imagine it’s early afternoon, and you’re walking just outside a small Mexican town. You start to hear the strains of light woodwinds and horns off in the distance. As you walk farther, towards the center of town, you feel the rumble of the percussion in the cobblestones below. The rhythm starts to mingle with the voices of the town, giving a soundtrack to the lively streets around you. Suddenly, the road emerges into the town square and there’s a banda playing a familiar tune: Malagueña Salerosa (La Malagueña). A crowd gathers, entranced by the performance. The music comes to a raucous finish and the audience showers them with cheers and applause!

Everyone who works in education found a love in school. For some, it was with a subject. Others saw the difference a teacher can make. Shirley Johnson’s passion is the Spanish language. During high school, she made the life-altering decision to take a Spanish course, and there she fell in love with the language and culture of both Spain and Mexico.

Shirley’s passion led her to study abroad in Mexico and Spain. Additionally, she’s taken many trips to those countries. She’s traveled with students, showing them a world she fell in love with. She took other journeys to immerse herself in cultures she’s spent her life learning from and teaching about.

Señora was written in honor of Shirley Johnson and the contributions she has made over 25 years to Dripping Springs ISD, as well as other schools around the state of Texas.

Commissioned by the Sycamore Springs Middle School Band, Jana Galloway, dir. (Dripping Springs ISD) of 2020-2021
