Ep. 12: Jason Robb (Rouse HS & Madison Scouts D&BC)

Jason is a husband, father, music educator, musician, designer, and amateur foodie living in the suburbs north of Austin, Texas with his wife Jackie and son Joseph. After teaching middle school band in the Houston area for 5 years, Jason relocated to Cedar Park, Texas to join the band staff at Cedar Park High School, capturing a UIL Texas State Marching Championship in 2015. In 2016, Jason accepted the position of Director of Bands for Rouse High School in Leander, Texas. Since assuming his position at Rouse, the program has been a Bands of America Regional Finalist, Regional and Super Regional Class Champion, and 5A UIL State Marching Championship Finalist. Jason was named the Phi Beta Mu Texas Young Bandmaster of the Year in 2018.

He spent 8 summers teaching on the Brass Staff of the Madison Scouts from Madison, Wisconsin, serving mainly as a high brass specialist and is returning to Madison serving as the Program Coordinator for the 2020 season. He spends his non-drum corps summertime designing and coordinating marching band productions, writing marching band drills, and consulting with high school band programs around the country while also working as a leadership facilitator for the SASi leadership company based in Austin, Texas.

Jason’s consultation approach—no matter the medium—is to find ways to help your program improve and provide a positive experience for your students. He maintains relationships with the best educators, designers, and innovators in music education and the pageantry arts today.

Ep. 11: Dan Morrison (Ronald Reagan HS)

Daniel Morrison is currently the Director of Bands at Ronald Reagan High School in San Antonio, TX. He manages and teaches the Ronald Reagan Marching Band and conducts the Wind Ensemble. In addition, he assists with the Symphonic Band, Concert Band, and various chamber ensembles. In his time at Reagan, the concert bands have received superior ratings at the UIL Concert and Sight Reading Contest, and the Marching Band has been a consistent Bands of America Regional, Super Regional, and Grand National Finalist as well as a UIL State Marching Contest finalist. Under Morrison’s direction, the Marching Band is a two-time winner of the Bands of America Conroe Regional and was selected to march in the 2018 Rose Parade. The Wind Ensemble was a TMEA State Honor Band Finalist as well as a Mark of Excellence National Winner. Morrison attended Prospect High School in Mt. Prospect, Illinois and graduated from the University of Illinois with a Bachelor’s and a Master’s Degree in Music Education. As a student at U of I, he was a member of the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, British Brass Band, Brass Choir and Brass Quintet and studied with James Keene, Joseph Manfredo, Ronald Romm, and Michael Ewald. He was also awarded the Daniel J. Perrino School of Music award for excellence in music education. Dan currently resides in San Antonio with his beautiful wife Ellie and their dog Pudge.

Ep. 10: Paul Pape (Georgetown HS, Cedar Park HS, Vandegrift HS, & On Leaving the Profession)

In 2016, Paul Pape completed his 6th year as the Percussion Director at Vandegrift High School in Austin, TX. During his tenure at VHS, the percussion section has been highly successful in many areas of percussion performance including solo, percussion ensemble, and marching percussion. The VHS Drumline, under the direction of Mr. Pape, has received numerous awards and honors across the state, including first-place finishes at several drumline contests, numerous band festival caption awards, and three finalist appearances at the prestigious Lone Star Drumline Contest. In 2015, the VHS Drumline also won 1st Place and was awarded the “Caldwell Cup” at the Lone Star Drumline Contest. In addition to his percussive responsibilities, Mr. Pape has been an integral part of the success of the VHS Concert and Marching Bands helping the group earn several accolades including numerous TMEA Honor Band State finalists placements, BOA Regional Class Championships, San Antonio BOA Super Regional Finalist placements, BOA Super Regional Class Championships, the Silver Medal at the 2015 5A Texas State Marching Band Championship, and were named the 4A Texas State Marching Band Champions in 2013.

Before coming to VHS Mr. Pape served as the Percussion Director for Cedar Park HS from 2008-2010 where his students earned numerous individual and group awards including the 2008 PASIC Championship and the 2009 Lone Star Drumline Contest Championship where they were also awarded the prestigious “Caldwell Cup”. Prior to his time at Cedar Park High School, Mr. Pape began his career as an Assistant Band Director and Percussion Director at Georgetown High School from 2002-2008 where his bands received superior ratings and his percussion sections were consistently successful. Under the direction of Mr. Pape, the GHS Drumline was awarded 1st place at the Central Texas Drumline Invitational in 2003, 2004 and 2006, 1st Place at the 2007 Plano Drumline Contest, the 2006 PASIC Championship & Fred Sanford Award, as well as the 2006 Lone Star Drumline Contest Championship.

Outside of his primary teaching position, Mr. Pape founded, organized, and conducted the Region 26 Percussion Ensemble, was on staff for the 2004 High Percussion Teal Sound Drum and Bugle Corps, and has served as a clinician/consultant to programs throughout Texas.

Paul is a 2001 graduate of Southwest Texas State University, earning a Bachelor of Music degree. As a performer, Paul has performed with the Austin Symphony Orchestra, the Austin Lyric Opera and several bands around the Austin/San Antonio area. Paul currently lives in Austin, TX with his wife Jennifer and two dogs, Abby and Parker.

Ep. 9: Zach Santos (Vista Ridge HS)

Zach Santos graduated from Round Rock High School in 2014. He attended the University of Texas at Austin where he received his bachelor’s degree in music studies in 2018. While attending UT he earned his trumpet performance certificate from the Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music, and his business foundations certificate from the McCombs School of Business.

Zach is currently one of the associate band directors at Vista Ridge High School in Cedar Park, Texas. His responsibilities include choreographing for the marching band, assisting in rehearsal, and conducting the symphonic and concert bands. Zach’s professional experience includes consulting for Rhythmic Force Indoor Percussion and The Guardians Drum and Bugle Corps as well as working as a visual technician for several world-class drum corps. Zach has given marching clinics in the central Texas area and choreographs for several high school programs throughout Texas.

Zach student taught in Leander ISD at Glenn HS with Ms. Kim Shuttlesworth and Running Brushy Middle School with Mr. Van Robison. While attending UT, Zach worked with several high school marching bands in the area including Leander High School, Cedar Ridge High School, and Austin High School.

His performance experience includes marching with the Guardians (2013), Crossmen (2014), Blue Knights (15-16), and most recently with the world championship Blue Devils (2017). He performed the UT Wind Ensemble under Jerry Junkin, as well as the UT Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony, and Symphony Band.

In his free time, he enjoys trying new restaurants, spending time with family and friends, and traveling.
